The City Full of Life and Color

The following post is from Multicultural Ambassador, Diana Martinez. To read more about the Multicultural Ambassadors program go to www.tarleton.edu/diversity.

I’ve always enjoyed visiting San Antonio. It has always had a special place in my heart because I remember the bonding memories I’ve made there as a child with my family whenever we went to go visit family there. After all these years San Antonio has never ceased to impress me; it is a city full of life and full of color. There is so much to see that sometimes I feel like the locals do not realize the significance of such a unique city. How many others cities in the world have the symbolic history of the Alamo, and the unique river walk that tangles around buildings and monuments that have withstood storms? Only in San Antonio can you find such a beautiful piece of land that was fought for and crafted by brave hands of men just like yours and mine. Beyond the beauty of the San Fernando Cathedral and the exhilarating view of the Tower of the Americas the trip was beyond enlightening and enriching in so many educational aspects.  At the Institute of Texan Culture, I was profound by the exhibit of “Stolen Education”, which was a documentary of the systematic discrimination against Mexican - Americans in the Texas schools system in the 1950s. It not only opened my eyes to the history of the time but to how much the Hispanic population was affected by this discrimination. Ultimately, it was a very empowering experience to see how much our society has grown and how much we still need to grow. Overall, my experience in San Antonio with the Multicultural Ambassadors was nothing more than perfect.
